The Engineer in the Octagon: Alexander Volkov’s Unique Background

Alexander Volkov, a Russian heavyweight ranked second in the UFC, brings a unique blend of engineering expertise and combat skills into the octagon. His background as an engineer from Bauman Moscow State Technical University shapes his approach to both his sport and personal life, emphasizing responsibility and independent decision-making.

From Engineering to MMA

Volkov’s journey in MMA began early, with a record of nine wins and three losses by the time he graduated university. His engineering degree was completed in 2011, and his professional fighting career had already gained momentum. By the end of that year, Volkov had added five more victories and defeated former UFC heavyweight champion Ricco Rodriguez within two months. This rapid rise through the ranks earned him a spot with the world’s top promotion in 2016.

“Engineers are taught to take personal responsibility for their professional actions, to be ready to make decisions on their own,” Volkov stated during an interview with the UFC. “So I made my choice, and my family accepted it.”

Notable Victories and Setbacks

Throughout his career, Volkov has alternated between victories and setbacks, but he remains a formidable presence in the heavyweight division. A notable defeat came at the hands of Derrick Lewis via knockout, yet Volkov quickly recovered to continue competing. His nickname “Drago” is derived from his resemblance to Ivan Drago, the character from Rocky IV played by Dolph Lundgren.

At 6-foot-7 (2.01 meters), Volkov’s physical attributes make him a formidable opponent in the heavyweight division. “They called me that because of my resemblance to the character from the sports movie Rocky IV,” Volkov explained. “Or, more accurately, to Dolph Lundgren.” His first significant loss came against Ciryl Gane via split decision, marking his second defeat and bringing an end to a nearly year-long absence.

Return to the Cage

Volkov returns to competition at UFC 312, facing Jailton Almeida. With the heavyweight division experiencing a resurgence after Jon Jones’ retirement, Volkov is well-positioned for potential title contention. His ranking and recent losses make him a key contender in the upcoming championship bout between interim champion Tom Aspinall and Ciryl Gane.

“The heavyweight division has been stagnant under Jon Jones, but now it’s alive again,” Volkov said. “There will be movement, and I’m ready to take advantage of that.” With his engineering background informing his fighting philosophy, Volkov aims to make a statement in his return match against Almeida.
