The Rise of Arizona State Sun Devils

Arizona State University’s football program is on the rise under coach Kenny Dillingham. The Sun Devils finished with a 3-9 record in their first season under Dillingham but have since turned things around, culminating in an impressive Big 12 championship and a spot in the College Football Playoff.

Despite a litany of injuries this season, Arizona State (8-3, 6-2 Big 12) has continued to find ways to win. Quarterback Sam Leavitt led the team with his dynamic play until he suffered a season-ending foot injury in early November. However, quarterback Jeff Sims stepped up admirably and the Sun Devils have maintained their momentum.

“It’s awesome that it matters,” Coach Dillingham said, expressing satisfaction that the game will be played between two teams playing good football.

A Turnaround at Arizona Wildcats

Arizona’s University of Arizona Wildcats have also seen a significant turnaround under coach Brent Brennan. The program had come off a 10-win season under Jedd Fisch but struggled in Brennan’s first year, finishing with just four wins. However, the team has made a strong second-year push, riding a four-game winning streak after only managing four wins the previous season.

Dynamic quarterback Noah Fifita and a stifling defense that’s among the nation’s best have been key to Arizona’s success this year. The Wildcats (8-3, 5-3) are currently playing as well as any team in their conference.

A Rivalry Rekindled

The Territorial Cup game between Arizona and Arizona State is set to be a high-energy affair, with both teams eager to prove themselves. This year marks the first time since 2014 that both teams have eight wins heading into this important matchup.

Coach Brennan expressed excitement about having two really good football teams facing each other: “Rivalry games have so much to them that make them so fun and exciting, but when you have two teams coming together that are both playing good football, it adds a little extra juice to it.”

The rivalry between Arizona and Arizona State dates back to the 1899 season. This year’s game will be a significant moment for both programs, as they seek to reclaim their place among college football’s elite.
