Crews have already closed the southeast corner of 35th Street, pushing traffic onto residential streets like Scott Street. This has created a “rush hour” in areas previously free from such congestion. Dale Hinz, a local neighbor, summed it up succinctly: “There’s a lot of traffic that I don’t want to see going down my block.”
Resident Frustration
The increased traffic is not just an inconvenience; it’s becoming a significant barrier for daily activities. Vicki Eckhart, another neighbor, complained about the difficulty in accessing local services: “It makes it almost impossible to get to the grocery store.” The once-quiet streets are now bustling with cars, creating a stark contrast to how things used to be.
City and State Joint Effort
The South 35th Street and National Avenue intersection project is a collaborative effort between the Department of Transportation and the city of Milwaukee. While they have expressed patience for the public’s understanding, the reality on the ground is far from ideal. Residents are left to navigate these changes with little respite.
