Wynton Marsalis: The Long Journey of Jazz at Lincoln Center
You might think this is new, but… Wynton Marsalis stepping down from his role as artistic director of Jazz at Lincoln Center has been in the making for a while. Founded in 1987 to fill space at the Lincoln Center’s programming calendar, the institution quickly became a cornerstone of American music education and exposure.
From Compromise Pick to Icon
And yet, Marsalis was once seen as a compromise pick. When Jazz at Lincoln Center launched, certain powerful figures within the center saw jazz as too disruptive. But Marsalis—descended from New Orleans musical legends like Ellis Marsalis—wasn’t just any musician; he was a masterful trumpeter and composer of traditional jazz.
For his first offering, he composed a series inspired by New Orleans funeral dirges that resonated with New York audiences. This success led to a permanent gig, and over the years, Jazz at Lincoln Center grew into much more than just a summer series.
A Legacy Built on Education
But Marsalis’ impact went beyond performances. He launched programs like Let Freedom Swing in elementary schools, Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition, and National Collegiate Jazz Championship. These initiatives have not only educated but also nurtured new generations of jazz musicians.
One of his proudest achievements was winning a Pulitzer Prize for the organization’s work, the first for jazz. He’s also taken on fusion projects, like the Grammy-nominated Latin jazz album “Una Noche con Rubén Blades.”
New Leadership Awaits
So what now? Clarence Otis Jr., chairman of the JALC board, expresses gratitude to Marsalis and confidence in the future. The organization’s upcoming season will celebrate Marsalis’ iconic career, but it’s clear that his legacy is far from over.
While Marsalis steps down as artistic director in July 2027, he remains on the board until June 2028, providing “institutional memory and insight.” An official search for a new leader has begun.
The schedule for the concerts is set to be released this month. For now, we can only wonder who will carry forward Marsalis’ unique brand of jazz excellence.
