Foxborough — The New England Patriots made headlines in free agency when they signed defensive tackle Milton Williams to a four-year, $104 million contract. This move came with some inherent risk, as Williams was coming off of a Super Bowl victory with the Philadelphia Eagles and had only been coached by staff from that team.
However, head coach Mike Vrabel emphasized that their pre-draft work on Williams aligns perfectly with his performance in Philadelphia and at the Patriots. “We did a lot of work on Milton coming out, like a lot of teams,” Vrabel said. “But I would say that everything we thought of him coming out is exactly what we saw in Philadelphia and then saw here.”
Williams’ Impact in the Wild-Card Round
In Sunday night’s wild-card round win over the Chargers, Williams made a significant impact. He not only set the tone by sacking Justin Herbert on second-and-9 with 53 seconds left in the second quarter but also closed out the game by bringing down the quarterback on fourth-and-9 with two minutes left in the fourth quarter.
“Man, I just feel like they brought me here for a reason,” Williams said. “And I try to show them why. I feel like I did that, and I want to show it more. And I’m blessed to have the opportunity.”
Leadership and Consistency
Williams has not only played well in recent games but has also established himself as a leader on the team. In a meeting this week, Vrabel highlighted Williams’ role as a model leader by example. “He’s a leader by example,” Zak Kuhr, the interim defensive coordinator, said. “And when he does speak up, everybody listens.”
Williams has played in 11 games this season before suffering an ankle injury and being placed on injured reserve. His absence was felt as the Patriots’ run defense went from one of the best to one of the worst. However, his return brought the team back to its defensive strength.
Rebounds Against Chargers
The Patriots limited Chargers running backs to just 30 yards on 12 carries in Williams’ return. He also ranked as PFF’s 17th-highest graded pass-rushing defensive tackle and finished 20th with 40 total pressures, despite missing five games.
Williams has already come up big when it matters this season and will be crucial for the Patriots to maintain their dominance against quarterback C.J. Stroud in their upcoming divisional round game against the Texans. “He’s one of the Patriots’ best overall players,” Vrabel said, emphasizing Williams’ importance as they aim to secure a home playoff game.

His message to his teammates who have not played deep into the playoffs is clear: “Doing the same thing we did last week, being consistent,” he said. “Be where you’re supposed to be. Go play for your teammates.”
