Introduction to the Nomination Process

The Detroit Free Press has launched its weekly nomination process for the Buffalo Wild Wings Girls Prep Athlete of the Week award. This recognition aims to highlight outstanding performances by high school athletes in the area, particularly those who have shone during the week of November 2-8, 2025.

The Nominees

Five talented athletes from different schools and sports are up for consideration:

• Gabby DiVita, a volleyball player from Grosse Pointe South, has been instrumental in leading her team to the regional semifinals. DiVita’s impressive statistics include 63 kills over four sets, maintaining a .426 hitting percentage, and contributing defensively with 27 digs and four blocks.
• Brenna Mirovsky, a junior outside hitter from Oxford, played a crucial role in the Wildcats’ quest for their first district title since 2002. Her efforts were pivotal in two hard-fought matches against Lake Orion and Clarkston, where she recorded a total of 22 kills, 35 digs, three blocks, and seven serving assists.
• Kayla Nwabueze, also from Bloomfield Hills, led her team to the regional semifinals following a historic win over Bloomfield Hills Marian.

  Over critical matches, she showcased her skills with a total of 35 kills, 13 digs, and three aces in one game before achieving 30 kills, 21 digs, and two blocks in another.

• Ashlyn Taylor, a senior swimmer from Gibraltar Carlson, played a key role in helping her team clinch a league title at the Downriver League Championship. She excelled in two individual races, achieving personal bests with a time of 1:02.21 in the 100-yard backstroke and another personal best of 2:18.79 in the 200-yard individual medley.
• Eleanor Williams, a junior right-side hitter from Romeo, contributed significantly to her team’s success as they entered the tournament unranked but managed to upset the No. 7 seed, Utica Eisenhower, with a thrilling 3-2 victory. Throughout the matches, she recorded a remarkable two-game total of 35 kills, 21 digs, four blocks, and five aces.
